The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
