The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.
